On base, off base, or buy
Whether on-base housing is open to you, and how long a wait to expect, is decided by the base housing office. Confirm that first so you know what you are actually choosing between.
Off base, you can rent or buy. A VA loan lets eligible buyers purchase with no down payment in many cases, which makes buying a real option for families who would otherwise rent. The right answer depends on your tour length, your BAH, and what you plan to do when orders come again. I will lay out both sides with real numbers.
Southwest San Antonio and beyond
The southwest side near Lackland offers established neighborhoods, a range of starter homes, and some of the shorter commutes to the gate. Many families also compare the west and northwest side, where newer subdivisions and a different price range come into play.
